Matt’s leadership, technical expertise, and passion for developing fighters played a key role in the success of the England squad at one of the most prestigious events in the WKU calendar. His ability to prepare athletes not only physically but mentally for the pressures of international competition is something that sets him apart — and this award is a reflection of the countless hours, experience, and heart he pours into his coaching.

As you will have noticed, Matt has spent most of this year preparing for the WKU World Championships in Rhodes, Greece, after winning the English title back in 2023.

With huge thanks to the support from Oubaitori Karate Club, and his sponsors (Compare the Market, Airport Arrivals Peterborough, and evaluagent) Matt has come back as the 18-34 year old (-90kg) WKU World Kumite Champion, and the under 85kg World Silver Medalist. Matt also competed in Kata and Hardstyle Forms, where he placed a respectable 7th.

It was a fantastic day for the squad, with several members heading over for the first time, and great performances by all. Sensei Matt lead and coached the Kumite area for children, teens, and adults already selected, and hopeful for selection, for the traditional Kumite team.
